History of Nagapattinam

Ancient Period

Nagapattinam was an important port city during the Chola dynasty (9th–13th century CE). It played a key role in maritime trade with Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and China. The town was known for its cultural diversity and prosperity. The famous Buddhist monastery “Chudamani Vihara” was built here by the Sailendra kings of Srivijaya with the support of Chola rulers, showing its global connections.

Medieval Period

After the Cholas, Nagapattinam came under the rule of the Pandyas, Vijayanagara Empire, and Nayaks. It continued to thrive as a trading hub and religious center, with Hindu temples, Buddhist influence, and later Christian establishments.

Colonial Era

In the 16th century, the Portuguese arrived, followed by the Dutch, who made Nagapattinam one of their major ports on the Coromandel Coast. Later, it came under British control. During this period, the town developed as an administrative and commercial center.

Modern Period

After Indian independence in 1947, Nagapattinam became part of Tamil Nadu. It gained prominence for fishing, salt production, and agriculture. The town was severely affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, after which major rehabilitation and development efforts were undertaken.
